Barry's Success Story

Barry’s Success Story

Once upon a time, my workouts consisted of long-distance running on a daily basis. Then in the early 2000’s I developed disfunction in my left quad muscle, a result of an ill prescribed medicine. As a result, I was forced to walk with a cane. Advancing age (I was in my 70s) contributed to balance and endurance issues.

About 10 years ago Judy Falcone, my trainer, turned my life around. My balance and vitality returned and my confidence soared. Judy designed workouts to improve my overall fitness, but more importantly, targeted the problems with my quad muscle. I no longer need a cane!
This year I ran the Irish 5K and came in fourth in my age division. At age 77 I was the oldest runner in the race.

I most enthusiastically recommend Advantage Personal Training to anyone who wishes to improve his or her health. It’s a pleasure to train in a friendly, supportive atmosphere with people who are truly interested in their clients’ success and wellbeing.

Arionna's before and after

Arionna’s Success Story

January 26th, 2017 was my 1 year anniversary at APT in Niantic. Joining Advantage was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I am not the same Arionna that walked through that door for the first time a year ago. I had no self-esteem, no confidence, no motivation, and I didn’t believe in myself. But I needed to do something because I was gaining weight quickly, and I was living a sedentary lifestyle. Plopping my butt on the couch after work with a glass of red wine and watching TV became a routine for me.

One day I came across the APT 21 Day Challenge on Facebook. It looked like something that I could do to get me moving and lose weight. After the challenge was over my results were incredible, I lost inches all over my body and just felt 100 times better. I actually started to enjoy working out and looked forward to going to the gym after work. Every day I felt myself getting stronger, and simple everyday tasks were getting easier. I could now carry groceries up a flight of stairs without getting winded, and I could pick up something without having to hold onto to something.

Working out daily has helped me physically and emotionally. Since I started at Advantage I’ve lost 20 pounds and gained quite a bit of muscle. My body has changed dramatically. I’ve become a lot stronger and my endurance has improved. I don’t have any of the aches and pains I used to have. My attitude has changed. Instead of saying I can’t or this is too hard for me I now challenge myself and give it all I have every team training I attend. I now believe in myself and believe that anything is possible through discipline and perseverance. In a year I have managed to reach my goals which were to complete a 5k race, lose weight, and do an unassisted pull-up.

My new goal is to compete in a bikini competition. I know I will reach this goal because the Trainers and the other members at Advantage are so supportive and motivating. I couldn’t do it without them!

Lisa’s Success Story

I used to run. I used to go to a gym without trainers, using various equipment with what I realize now was pretty bad form. The result was knee pain. I then fell on my knee and injured it. The fall along with misguided exercise, yo-yo dieting, and arthritis made it harder and harder to get around. I also have a hereditary swelling in my legs called Lipedema. The combination made me increasingly immobile, over-weight, and depressed. I bent over when I walked, unable to straighten up without pain. I was having trouble straightening my leg out after sitting, intermittently. It was bad.

The gym became my life-line. The trainers (particularly, Keith) never let me give up. If I couldn’t do one thing they always had an alternative. They were both compassionate and upbeat. I came six days a week, determined to regain my mobility. I also saw Bethany (the wonderful Nutritionist) once a week. I learned how to eat whole foods and avoid inflammatory foods. I also learned to stop making food the enemy. I slowly started to lose weight and gain strength! A little less than a year later I had a total knee replacement, and after a difficult recovery and painful physical therapy, I came back to the gym (as soon as the doctor gave the OK).

I have lost more weight but I have also replaced fat with muscle. I am doing things now that I haven’t done in years, from walking up the stairs “like normal people,” to doing squats. The swelling in my legs has also gone down and I am standing up much straighter. The gym for me has been life-changing and I cannot thank everyone enough for helping me get to this point.

Linda’s Success Story

As a teenager, I carried a few extra pounds and did not like the image in the mirror. A few years after having my daughter at age 18, I joined my first gym, a women’s only facility. Not feeling challenged enough, I moved onto a coed gym, where I worked with a personal trainer. While I loved working with weights and my muscles became defined, I grew bored with the routine and decided to try the glitzy gym across the street where I mainly took spin classes and wandered aimlessly. Yet again, I grew bored.

I started running outside and a whole new world opened up for me! In 2005 I did a full marathon. This was my new thing! I could eat all I wanted and never gain weight due to all the cardio, but I still had these few extra pounds that would just not go away and was still not happy with the image in the mirror. In addition, I lost my muscle definition because I had stopped strength training.

Over the years, I’ve completed numerous 5K races (taking 1st place in my age group once), many half marathons, Ragnar Relay Road & Trail Races, and several obstacle course races (taking 3rd place in my age group in the Hartford Down & Dirty race a few years ago). I love the challenge, all the like-minded people I’ve met and all the sights I’ve seen while running through the countryside I otherwise never would have seen.

But still, those few extra pounds until I joined one of APT’s 21-Day programs in May of 2017. The nutrition plan was not at all hard to follow but was certainly different from anything I had tried before: counting calories or points, the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet (remember that one?)…But this plan worked! Quickly! In 21 days I lost those last stubborn 7 pounds and I could look at and carry myself in confidence!!! I was so psyched that I joined APT and I am so happy I made that decision because, the personalized strength training programs have brought back my muscle definition which in turn has improved my running performance and endurance, all while having fun. Amazing, right?, that at age 57, I’m in the best shape of my life and I feel it too! I LOVE Advantage Personal Training, where the workouts are never boring, the trainers are dedicated and obviously love what they do, the atmosphere is upbeat, and I always leave with a smile on my face. APT is most definitely “The best part of my day”.

My next goal? The unassisted pull-up. Why? Because with APT I can!

Maria’s Success Story

I had always been fairly active, but gyms bored me. I’d make it a few months and decide that I wasn’t having fun, so I’d quit going. I got my workouts in scuba diving, skydiving, and running around at work, or around the house. However, life and a desk job got in the way of my well being. By Christmas of 2015 I had had enough of not feeling well. One day around that time I happened to drive by Advantage Personal Training. I made the decision to stop in and ended up signing up for the 21 day trial that started in January of 2016. I finished the trial and haven’t looked back. Two and a half years later I’m still here.

Looking back I see how far I’ve come. Because I hadn’t been feeling well I scheduled myself to see my doctor in the summer of 2016. My blood work came back and he said “I believe you’re pre-diabetic and we should start you on medication. You need to start testing your sugar”. I told him I wouldn’t do that. I would make lifestyle changes before I would even start to think about taking medication and accept a pre-diabetic diagnosis. He said, “I disagree, but let’s see how it goes”.

With the direction and support from the staff at Advantage, my workouts changed to better meet my needs. I started talking to the Nutritionist, and my eating habits changed. I found myself tracking my food, and my macros, and I started feeling so much better!

Fast forward to June of 2018 when I was nagged into going in for a follow-up doctors appointment. When I told him I was there under protest and reiterated my refusal to take medication and track my sugar, he laughed and said, “Let’s see what your blood work says”. After a few raised eyebrows and a lot of scrolling on his screen, he laughed and said “Whatever you’re doing, it’s working. All of your blood work levels are where they need to be. I don’t see any reason for the diagnosis at this time or any need for medication. If you don’t mind my asking, did you turn into a gym rat or become obsessive about your food?”. I laughed and answered, “kind of both..”.

And I guess that is kind of true. I’m at APT an average of 5 days per week. I’m in better overall shape now than I was in high school. And In the last two and a half years I have completed 3 marathons, 1 half marathon, 3 Tough Mudders, 1 Spartan Trifecta, (with 2 more Trifectas pending this year), and a bunch of 5K runs.

So, THANK YOU APT! I haven’t gotten bored, I’ve revamped the way I approach fitness AND food, and I have made some fantastic friends along the way with whom I’ve shared so much fun and laughter. You really are the best part of my day.

Mel before and After

Mel N’s Success Story

Mel before and AfterPrior to joining APT I hadn’t worked out at all. I had a lot of changes going on in my life and felt overwhelmed; therefore my activity was limited. I had a lot of obstacles to face…being tired was my biggest one. I was too tired to get out of my own way and unfortunately, things spiraled from there.

Before joining APT I started a new full-time job and I hadn’t worked full time since 1991. Two of my kids were in college, and my baby was graduating high school and going off to college. My parents both had health issues that required me to take care of them. I was taking care of 2 households. I could go on but you get the picture!

Since joining APT, over the last year I’ve gained in energy what I’ve lost in weight. I’ve increased my muscle mass so that I can burn more fat, and I’ve gained more confidence in MYSELF. Nutrition has also played a significant role in improving my health. I found the way I should be eating for MY body. It’s been hard but the results speak for themselves. I will never go back to my old habits. I will only keep going forward!

Ultimately, APT has instilled healthy habits into my life. My parents are both ill, and I see what diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and years of not taking care of themselves has done to them. I want to be around for my grandkids, be able to participate in events, etc. Working out has given me energy, stamina, and an all-around great feeling.

Bruno Advantage Personal Training

Bruno’s Success Story

Bruno Advantage Personal TrainingI went into APT the week before Easter weighing in at 285lbs. I physically could not walk without my knees and back hurting. It was a struggle to get out of bed. I knew it was time for a change, but I just wasn’t motivated. I didn’t realize how out of shape I had gotten. My body fat percentage was over 30% and my visceral fat (the fat around my organs) was over 15%. I needed to get motivated and get some results.

I met with Keith and his first question was, “What is your goal? To lose weight? Get stronger?“ I said my goal is just to be able to do activities with my family. I just wanted to be able to enjoy my family. To be able to wake up and out of the blue decide to do an obstacle course or go for a neighborhood run. I wanted to go kayaking and skiing without hurting myself. So Keith wrote up a fitness plan for me and gave me an easy diet to follow.

My biggest hurdle was making the time to go. I had worked out in the past, and I always found excuses not to go, and when I did go I would find myself doing the same exercises over and over.

At APT I work out around my schedule. There are many trainers so I am not locked into just one, and I don’t have to adhere to that trainer’s schedule. The trainers also communicate with each other and work as a team to help me achieve my goals.

I look forward to going to the gym. The atmosphere is always fun and energetic. The workouts are never boring or repetitive, and the trainers always make sure my form is good and that I am doing the exercise safely. It’s been almost five months, and I am now down 60lbs! My body fat percentage is 15% and most importantly my visceral fat is at 9%. I feel like a new man, and I couldn’t have done it without APT.

Alan’s Success Story

Alan Before and After Advantage Personal TrainingI am extremely fortunate to have a wonderful family. Spending quality time with my wife and kids is paramount in my everyday life.

Having operations on both shoulders to repair AC joints and rotator cuffs compromised my ability to remain active with my family. Carpal tunnel in both hands and a diagnosis of hypertension further complicated the situation. I had to do something!

I first attempted cardio workouts, but it was difficult to incorporate them into my very busy schedule. Lifting weights did not work out because of the limited mobility in my shoulders. I was at a crossroads. The question was, “Do I continue to struggle with conditioning activities that don’t fit into my life routine, or do I give up and not fulfill my goals?” The answer: Advantage Personal Training.

Because of the knowledgeable trainers at APT I learned how to meet my goals and stay healthy and safe. I was taught how to exercise while considering my own personal circumstances. My trainer would say, “Don’t lift that weight at that angle Alan, it will aggravate your rotator cuff!” That sort of personal, individual attention keeps me safe while I get an excellent workout.

The proof is in the outcome. I have reduced my body fat by 27 pounds, to 17%. I have less shoulder and back pain, and I run eight-minute miles while enjoying greater flexibility.

I most enthusiastically recommend APT to anyone who wants to feel and look better. When I first thought of the name of the gym I thought of the word “ADVANTAGE” as a competitive sports term. You know, gain an “advantage” over your opponents. As time has passed, I now realize the “A” in APT refers to an Advantage in life!

Lizzy's Success story

Lizzy’s Story

What is your motivation?

My motivation comes from multiple sources, my most important motivation is my son. He motivates me to push myself to be the absolute best version of myself. He see’s me work hard to do my best, giving him motivation to workout and be healthy. Also people who tell me how far I’ve come, ask for help when they’re first starting off in their fitness journey. It shows that the results of my hard work is apparent, and this motivates others. This in turn motivates me to do even more.

What brought you to Advantage Personal Training?

I was working out at another gym, doing insane cardio and using no weights. I wasn’t losing any weight. A friend suggested I try an Advantage’s Challenge. Two years later I have lost several pounds of fat doing heavy lifting and very little cardio. I’ve gained a “ton” of muscle, and it’s all because I accepted the Advantage Personal Training Challenge.

What keeps you coming back to Advantage Personal Training?

The atmosphere, the trainers, always being pushed and motivated to do more. It’s the best gym you could be a part of!
